WATABE YUKICHI »A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION« – selected by GREGER ULF NILSON

»In close proximity to the tradition of the photo novel, A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION follows two detectives 59 from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police in 1958. Yutaka Takanashi’s photographs play out like a film noir, complete with a detective who looks more and more like a Japanese Humphrey Bogart as the story develops. Its unique page twisting design causes interesting breaks in the flow of images, like small chapters or vignettes, as the case turns its various corners. A minimal amount of text contributes the facts of the case and the conclusion. Form and tone are perfect. The cloth of the cover, the inserted title and image, the black strap, the paper, the typography, the genius of the book’s cut black front, Japanese folded pages and a deep gravure-like printing, all put the stamp of a diary | police report on it. What I’d like to ask the Japanese detective is where is the name of the book’ s designer. How the book ends, I will not reveal.«
