DAVID ALLEN HARVEY »(BASED ON A TRUE STORY)« – selected by WOLFGANG ZURBORN

»The book (BASED ON A TRUE STORY) by David Alan Harvey is fiction and document at one and the same time. The straight photographs show the parallel worlds in the everyday life of Rio, between the favelas and the beaches. You can feel the diversity of the living conditions in every part of the complex and rich pictures. The interaction between the images is forced by the design of the book, which creates a net of visual impacts by confronting half images with each other on a double page. There is no linear story, but the spectator is attracted by a playful game, a puzzle, which forces the imagination to find an own interpretation of what is to be seen. The binding of the book does not fix the sequence. It is possible to take out the book pages and find new combinations, or to put single pictures in a frame. The book (BASED ON A TRUE STORY) is a radically subjective view on the part of David Alan Harvey of the people surrounding him in Rio, involving all the different feelings between tenderness and violence. On the other hand, it is a very intelligent, subtle and humorous construction of reality. If these qualities come together, then following the personal trip of a photographer is pure enjoyment.«
