EUGENE RICHARDS »THE BLUE ROOM« – selected by MATHIAS HARDER

»Eugene Richards’ new book deals with deserted and forgotten farms and houses located in American states such as Nebraska, Kansas or New Mexico. The design of this large landscape-format book is as simple as it is consistent: the left side remains empty, thus creating the necessary white space; the right side contains a landscape-format image depicting the emptiness of places and human traces, taken with a 35 mm camera by a unique documentary photographer who has inspired a whole generation. “BLUE ROOM” is a moving book which uses color for the first time. It portrays memories and loss, economic and personal tragedies, in a symbolic and distanced way yet without the need to substantiate them. It would seem that these days photojournalism can produce a directness and intensity of this caliber only as a photobook-essay, rather than being published through a magazine.«
