KENJI HIRASAWA »CELEBRITY« – selected by CHRIS BOOT

»The ironic conceit of Kenji Hirasawa’s series, pictures of people having their photographs taken with 13 waxworks of famous figures at Madame Tussaud’s, is to use a thermographic camera that barely picks up the presence of the waxwork, only the heated bodies that surround them. People appear as psychedelic ghosts, next to the absence of their wax idols. The series is resolved and distilled in thrilling and perfectly simple photobook form, without text (apart from the names of the invisible heroes at the back), and a color temperature gauge for an introduction. The book has a rare purity. It’s a wonderful book in its own right. Published in an edition of 500 copies, it’s also an example of the adventurous work being done now by independent publishers on a tiny scale.«
