WILLIAM EGGLESTON »CHROMES« – selected by MITCH EPSTEIN

»CHROMES comes closest to the experience I had as a young man in the 70s seeing Eggleston’s slides 25 projected in a darkened room. Drawn from his most operatic and seminal body of work, chromes is a three-volume compendium of Eggleston’s 35mm transparencies made between 1969–1974. There is merely a one-page preface by Thomas Weski, and no other texts, titles, dates, or caption information. This is unmitigated Eggleston: just pictures reproduced with remarkable fidelity and depth. Volume I opens with a portrait of Eggleston sleeping on a bed, and Volume III closes with the same image. In between, Eggleston’s pictures of Memphis and its environs are punctuated by family and friends, including John Szarkowski with binoculars draped around his neck. In an era when much of photographic book-making is at the ser vice of the clever, short-lived autobiographical riff, chromes is Old Testament.«
