TOSHITHUGU YAMAWAKI »DUAL I & II« – selected by CLÉMENT KAUTER

»This book was fully conceived and produced by the author. This handmade production is incredible: The cover is built out of a kind of cardboard painted white. The binding is also handmade. The pages are sewn together and glued to the binding. The printing process is fantastic: it is a digital process print on a special Japanese paper (the pages are double). When you look at your shelves, it doesn‘t just look like any other book. DUAL I & II show an opposition between two pictures; as a diptych, you are simply impressed at first glance by each picture, but when you begin to find the associations between them, you are really stunned. Because the author uses a lot of different visual codes (form, color, position, dream) to create this duality, he in fact wants the pictures to exist in a complementary manner. These images result from some 30 years of travel and photography, collected and gathered as a real image-bank that everybody has in their own memory. This book could be a nice tool for students who want to learn about layout, or just to train their eye.«
