MARTIN CRAWL »EN RÊVANT À PARTIR« – selected by CLÉMENT CHÉROUX

»EN RÊVANT À PARTIR is a modest book. It certainly is part of these highly democratic and exciting times that 17 one is able to wake up with an idea for a photobook in the morning and when one goes to bed at night the book is complete. This book by the French-American artist Martin Crawl, born 1967, combines about sixty photographs which all come from flea markets or internet purchases — accompanied by the same amount of poetic short texts in French and English. Everything is neatly bound and printed in an elegant volume by Swiss graphic designer Teo Schifferli. Within the plethora of found photographic collections or similar works that I have seen in previous years, this is by far the most convincing and moving of all. This is due to the linking of a very pointed image selection with a text quality rarely found in photobooks, but also to the power of the small detail, as described by Roland Barthes, which can occasionally move us to tears.«
