TAMIKO NISHIMURA »ETERNAL CHASE« – selected by CHRISTOPH CRISON and AYA TAKADA

Christoph Crison: »Standing next to what looks like a relaxing traveler, it was the intriguing book title eternal chase that first caught my attention. From the ‘70s to the early ‘80s, Japanese photographer Nishimura Tamiko made multiple trips to the northern region of Japan. From her on-the-road-like journeys, she brought back memories and sensations that would eventually shape this portrait of a pre-urban and yet shinkansenfree landscape. Nishimura mostly photographed kids and women facing harsh climate conditions to a point where one can almost feel the sun, rain, wind, and snow falling on their faces, almost erasing subjects from the frame. Still, her straightforward and gritty pictures do not aim to impress. Like the book itself, with its graceful and grainy b&w cover, the photos instead gently bring to mind fleeting moments. Maybe Nishimura wants the viewer to be, like she had been herself, the witness of a world about to vanish.»

Aya Takada: »This is a document of her trip that began in the early 1970s. Here the photos mainly show the Tohoku region and Hokkaido. Some folklorists think and imagine that a part of the Tohoku region was the most cultured place on the Japanese islands in ancient times. Though the tone is totally dark and depressive, and the texture looks like sandblasting, these monochrome images evoke a feeling of dazzling sunlight specific to northland. Some images of landscapes taken from the train window tell us that she visited the same place more than once. Searching for her destination, she may not have found it. When the photos that had remained obscure over the decades were finely edited, that is to say, when this book was published, the destination and the aim of her trip were probably revealed for the first time, as she writes at the end of this publication. Although the book structure is authentic, ink multiplex in black has overlapped. It seems that it w as rubbed.»
