MICHAEL P. BERMAN »GILA« – selected by MARY VIRGINIA SWANSON

»Michael P. Berman first visited the Gila Wilderness in southwestern New Mexico in 1974, moving to live on the edge of this vast landscape in 1990. The GILA was designated a wilderness in 1923 restricting further development, yet the draw of the wild, the value of water and other natural resources continue to challenge this land. Berman’s interest is in the life of the land today. As is his practice, Berman spent many years becoming familiar with the complex biology, geology, ecology and culture of this place before making photographs in its midst. Berman confirmed his collaborators (editor, designer, writers) and headed into the Gila with his medium format camera and film to make images for the book. David Skolkin was in place to oversee design and production of the project. He and Berman edited the initial 1.000 images down to 500, and created three page layout styles presenting 225 single images in variations of multiple image grids. Berman the printed exact page proofs to scale; the final book was sequenced on the wall. Skolkin assembled the literary contributions in a separate volume devoid of images, and Berman’s photographs appear without captions or page numbers. Presented separately, the words and pictures gain strength and provide greater understanding of this project. The majority of Berman’s photographs were printed for the first time during production. He scanned his negatives and made a grey scale file, which Thomas Palmer interpreted and made the duotones; Skolkin was on press to supervise printing. The final order of appearance: Volume One: Radical Visions (texts) and Volume Two: The Enduring Silence (photographs) housed within an imag e-wrapped slipcase.«
