PAUL KOOIKER »HEAVEN« – selected by HESTER KEJSER

»Whereas Paul Kooiker’s previous publications exhibited certain playfulness, this takes a turn in heaven. Darker and more ‘real’, it is his most personal book to date. The commanding grid on the pearly white cover indicates what awaits us: nudes, invariably voluptuous, staged in unassuming environments and directed through awkward poses and exercises. We are witness to an obsession only interrupted by the photographer’s personal life: Polaroids of fountains, pets, landscapes or a trip to the beach — preluded by self-portraits standing next to the coffin of a close relative. Apart from the obligatory colophon, there is no text. The images are only given a date and a number, meticulously organized in grids by an unknowable algorithm. In wordlessness, we watch Kooiker watching, working, setting the stage, shifting the light, totally focused, always looking for the same thing, but never finding the answer — and in the silence of our minds we are left asking only this one question: Why?«
