BAHMAN JALALI »MONOGRAPH« – selected by CHRISTINE FRISINGHELLI

»This monograph on the photographer Bahman Jalali, who was born in 1944 in Teheran, accompanies he retrospective mounted by the Tàpies Foundation. The book impressively combines Jalali’s arious roles: as an archivist of the history of his country with an emphasis on the Iran-Iraq war and the ranian revolution; as an artist whose photographic practice embraces a multitude of techniques; and finally as a collector, a preserver of the cultural facts of his country. Rarely in recent years has the lifework of a photographer shown me in such a touching way just what the intelligence, energy and political clarity of an individual can do not only for the collective consciousness, for one’s own country, but also for the “distant observer”, whose view is often distorted by the “informative” images that confront us on a daily basis.«
