PIETER HUGO »NOLLYWOOD« – selected by FREDDY LANGER

»At some stage one fortunately realizes that Pieter Hugo’s photographic series ‘Nollywood’ is just a game with horror. Because its images, such as when a burned driver gets out of his damaged car or when an African king sheds blood -red tears, were all taken by Hugo during film shoots in Nigeria. Spending more than 300 million dollars annually puts this African nation in place three worldwide for film productions. Up to one and a half thousand films are created on this budget, but it rarely produces quality. Hugo shows the actors and extras, especially of cheap horror films, with make-up. But he doesn’t show them in scenes, rather he composes portraits that serve as his commentary on African politics and reality, the conflicts of which have just recently been exposed again in a brutal fashion. This promptly wipes the smile off the face of the viewer. An eerie book.«
