SHOMEI TOMATSU »PHOTOGRAPHS 1951–2000« – selected by RUSSET LEDERMAN

»A good photobook has a well-considered cadence. It can be dense and layered, or minimal and spare. But, most importantly, it must make sense as a whole, as it takes both the mind and eye on a journey. This meticulously produced photobook succeeds because it functions as an entity whose essence is palpable the moment it is picked up. It feels complete. All its elements work together to encourage both contemplation and questioning. It is a book with a soul. As one of the last books published by Shomei Tomatsu before his death, it reflects a successful collaboration between photographer and publisher. Its precise editing and restrained design show Tomatsu’s range as a photographer, whose images straddle a position between pure symbolism and narrativity, as they reframe photography beyond a literal interpretation. Figuration and abstraction flow in a sequence that carefully weaves symbolic references together. A kimono-clad female flaring smoke from her nose stares at the reader; a close-up of a woman deep in thought sits on a page opposite an abstracted image of water. There is breathing room here. White space is as valuable as the photographs. The balance is per fect.«
