TOSHITERU YAMAJI »PIGS AND PAPA« – selected by IVAN VARTANIAN

»PIGS AND PAPA was first published in 2009 as a self-published photobook. Over ten years, amateur photographer Toshiteru Yamaji created an extended document of a pig f armer and the animals who are like his extended family. The book won the 13th Annual Japan Self-Published Culture Award. Word-of-mouth acclaim led to the trade edition publication by Foil in 2011. While amateurism in Englishdenotes something underdeveloped, in Japan the work of amateurs has a respected aesthetic and process, with its own standards of excellence and its own pursuits. A large number of amateur photographers in Japan chose nature or animals as a subject. PIGS AND PAPA is one such body of work. Foil’s decision to publish a trade version of the self-published edition indicates the power and freshness that can be found in minor photography, and challenges our conventional ideas of high and low.«
