CARLOS SPOTTORNO »THE PIGS« – selected by FREDERIC LEZMI and MARKUS SCHADEN and CÄCILIA ZÖLLER

Frederic Lezmi: »When Carlos Spottorno showed me his new photo book, THE PIGS, in Arles, it was love at first sight. In it Spottorno combines everything a good photo book needs to have: strong and powerful images, a clever concept as well as a stringent design and execution. Working on an actual and difficult topic to photograph — the financial crisis in the south of Europe — he found the perfect form: a satirical comment. The book, or rather the magazine, comes as a replica of the financial newspaper the economist and makes fun of the awkward acronym THE PIGS, which stands for Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain. It is designed in the same way and printed on the same paper as the original it refers to. Apart from the clever design, it is the photography that especially strikes me. They are satirical punches, playing with clichés and visual expectations. Subtle but pointed, it is a self-reflected comment by a great and intelligent Spanish photographer. Bravo!«

Markus Schaden: »Arles, summer 2013. I had a feeling I might have overlooked something vital. To put it differently: After five hours and more than 500 photobooks, I had dismissed this magazine-like object with the red PIGS logo maybe a bit too soon, by putting it on the ‘not shortlisted’ stack. The afternoon heat in Arles played a part as well. There was just an awful lot of paper to evaluate … That evening, my jury colleague Agnes Sire and I talked about the overall impression. Much good work, but not a single photobook that really stirred up my blood. That came only when Frederic Lezmi brought me an example of PIGS two weeks later, once again in Arles. “Did you manage to see THIS, it’s brilliant, isn’t it?” It was fantastic, and worse, it was worthy of the first prize at Arles. “Sorry!” I wrote to Carlos Spottorno later. It can happen, but PIGS will forge ahead regardless. Convincing in every way. Just a terrific piece.«

Cäcilia Zöller: »The acronym PIGS is used to refer to Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain during their current sovereign debt crisis. Spottorno seizes on the derogatory onnotation of the term PIGS and illustrates the situation in these countries the way he imagines the economists would see it. The result is a portrait of decline – onesided, stereotyped. The design emphasizes the point of view, as it is identical to that of the economist – in terms of size and even paper. Simple in form, complex in content, The Pigs raises questions and forces critical analysis. That’s why I like it.«
