DAVID MAGNUSSON »PURITY« – selected by CARLOS SPOTTORNO

»The bluish photographs of those adult men holding young girls tightly is immediately disturbing, and I can’t take my eyes off those formal portraits. Why would a girl make a public statement about her sexual behaviour (or its absence), and why is a father involved in such a matter. In my world, sex is a private affair. Sex is something you do or don’t with your peers. You may talk about it with your parents, but you don’t let them participate in any way, for no reason. David Magnusson explains how he started to photograph this project with strong prejudices against those “Purity Balls”, and how gradually he felt that he had judged too quickly. David was able to break down the wall of incomprehension and went through an internal process from disbelief to understanding. The fact that David tried to please those couples, and the fact that he succeeded in that endeavour, make the book even more intriguing to me. I love when the plain facts, with no artificial emphasis, are strong enough to make you feel something, and that’s why I do appreciate the neutrality of this book as an object. The photographer was clever to let the story float for itself, instead of covering it with layers of conceptual tricks.«
