LIEKO SHIGA »RASEN KAIGAN/ALBUM« – selected by GERRY BADGER and SEBASTIAN ARTHUR HAU

Gerry Badger: »Lieko Shiga’s spiral coast/album derives from her work as a community photographer for the small Japanese settlement of Kitakama, which was devastated in the 2011 Fukajima tsunami. The book is both a memorial and a polemic about Shiga’s relationship to the community and to photography, shot in a highly expressionistic, poetic mixture of the real and the fictional, the objective and the personal, the diaristic and the staged, the fine art photograph and the snapshot. It is certainly one of the most flamboyant photography books of recent years.«

Sebastian Arthur Hau: »There is only one book this year (which has been a year with surprising and highly interesting books) that troubles and excites me to this extent, RASEN KAIGAN, and the audacity of its publisher and the artist who made it. Looking through it again and again, I trust its narrative and am seduced by its images. Basically the shock I felt when first seeing the book repeats itself almost every time I show it to someone, but only after reading interviews with Lieko Shiga and listening to her story did the different layers become readable — some background knowledge is indeed necessary to navigate through this transformed yet so frugal world. Rereading my words, I hope that I can communicate my excitement, which is not unlike that of a teenager reading a comic book, and at the same time the involvement of a reader studying a work of art and in awe of its timelessness and s tyle.«
