RAÚL GÓMEZ »REPERTOIRE« – selected by JULIETA ESCARDÓ

»REPERTOIRE narrates a very particular political and social event in Latin America — the military coup in Chile in 1973 and the international context of the ‘70s and ‘80s — through a personal story. The book brings together photographs, notes and texts that belonged to Raúl Gomez, the author’s father. This legacy (more than 40.000 photographs and numerous notes and records) represents a personal testimony of a life devoted to cultural management, music, his family and his exile in France. repertoire is the name of the notebook that Raúl Gomez used to write down his thoughts and notes. This material drove Rodrigo Gómez Rovira — his son and the photographer, producer and editor of this book — to replicate almost identically the format of the original object. Thus, he chose ivory color newsprint paper and covered the books with the same type of paper his father had used to cover his own notebooks. In addition, the author handwrote himself, in every single copy of the 1.000 books, the same star that his father had doodled on the cover of his journal. The goal has been achieved: holding this book in our hands, we get the feeling that this object bears witness to time and has plenty of stories behind it. One of the anecdotes that stand out took place one afternoon in the year 1972, when the Gomez family was driving their car and came across Salvador Allende, who was being escorted by his body guards. They stopped the car, rolled the window down and asked him if they could take a picture of him. The president, seeing them all together replied, ‘Ok, but we will do a family portrait’. At that moment they all got out of the car and took a picture together. The book opens with this image, which sets the tone for the stories to come.«
