JOAO RIPPER, SERGIO CARVALHO »RETRATO ESCRAVO« – selected by BRUNO CESCHEL

»I am nominating this book because it deals with a generally hidden issue, slave labor in societies that are considered democratic and that have a labour law. This makes the subject extremely difficult to photograph, and it requires major commitment by the photographers, who take serious risks to be in the tough place at the right moment, shoot and get away with it. The book covers all regions of Brazil, now an emerging power, and deals with an issue that is not at all nice about Brazil. At the same time the book shows that change is taking place, since these issues can now be publically discussed. Democracy in a way helps to enable photographers to work freely and create images that provoke thought and are an incentive for change.«
