STEFAN KIELSZNIA »ULICA NOWA 3« – selected by GÜNTER KARL BOSE

»Only remnants are left of the former Jewish district in the Polish city of Lublin. It was destroyed by Germans. 15 man troops and most of its inhabitants were annihilated in the gas chambers of the German concentration camps. One Lublin archive contains 148 photographs of five of the district’s roads. The former amateur photographer Stefan Kielsznia took them all during the 1930s. The specialness of the compilation lies in the conceptual system of the photographs, which were obviously taken without having been commissioned. Kielsznia photographed the streets, house by house, usually the lower floors with their small bars, shops and workshops. Some of the photographs depict a 10-year-old boy who kept following the photographer and who again and again posed shyly in front of the camera. His smile has survived the horror«
